Hunting pheasant in South Dakota
South Dakota harvests more pheasants than any state — 800,000 to 1.2 million birds a year — and the October opener is a statewide hunting holiday. Full-service lodges work thousands of acres of private CRP, food plots, and cattail sloughs, and you'll typically shoot your three-rooster limit most days over pointing or flushing dogs.
Lodge hunts run $1,200–$3,500 for three days with meals, lodging, dogs, and guides; a nonresident small-game license is about $121, and DIY public-land hunts are very doable with a good dog. The Aberdeen area is the traditional core, with strong options around Pierre, Winner, and Mitchell. Lodges book a year out for opening weekend, so plan a mid-November trip if you want lower rates and thinner crowds.
