Hunting elk in Montana

Montana is the connoisseur's elk state and the hardest major western state for a first-timer: the nonresident combination license is draw-only (~$884, apply by April 1), the quality units need preference points, and the country is steep and wild. The reward is real public-land mountain hunting in the Bitterroot, Missouri Breaks, Gravellys, and Bob Marshall.

A fully guided hunt runs $7,500–$12,000 plus license and travel — roughly $9,500–$14,500 all-in for six days; wilderness drop camps are $2,800–$4,500. Some outfitters hold sponsored licenses that bypass the public draw, so ask explicitly whether your hunt depends on drawing the combo.
